History:
The first settlers recorded as dwelling here were a tribe of the Creek Nation. They built their town on the banks of a river they called the Okoni, meaning "The Great Water." The people of Cuscowilla Town were Miccosukee speakers. The nucleus of the Seminole Nation however, was to form around a settlement of Oconee, Chiaha, Apalachicola and Sawokali town members. They came to prominence as allies of the English General Oglethorpe in his attack on St. Augustine in 1740. Afterwards they established a settlement at Cuscowilla (present day Micanopy, Florida) where they flourished as cattlemen. Their first leader, appropriately known as the Cowkeeper (an Oconee), was a sworn enemy of the Spanish. Throughout his life he kept both the Spanish and English out of what he considered to be the Seminole Nation, essentially all of the land west of the St. Johns River. Chief Micanopy was the chief of the Seminole Nation during the 2nd Seminole War, 1835-1842. His capital village was Cuscowilla, built at the cross of two ancient Indian trails that later became the American settlement of Micanopy, founded in 1821. Chief Micanopy at first was friendly and helpful to the Americans. As time went on and more of the Seminole lands were settled as farms and settlements, treaties were broken. The Indians were forced against their will to live on a reservation and hostilities began.
