History:
Tseghahoodzani aka Window Rock is the seat of government for the Navajo Nation. Its location had so impressed John Collier, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, that in 1936 he decided to make it the seat of the Navajo government. He had initially thought of naming it "Nee Alneeng", ("the center of the Navajo world"). The name was somewhat unfortunate, because it also means "hell" in Navajo. So he ended up deciding on "Window Rock", in reference to a natural curiosity of the place: a sandstone cliff pierced with a circular hole located 30 m high and with a diameter of 14 m, which evokes a window. The small town then developed around the Navajo administrative center located at the foot of the cliff. Window Rock's most remarkable building is the seat of the Navajo Nation council, the legislative body of the Navajo government, whose octagonal plan resembles that of a Navajo hogan. Inside, murals tell the story of the Navajo people.
