Apart from the route from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Southern Pacific's most famous and most important route is the Donner Pass, which forms the westernmost leg of the Transcontinental Railroad from Omaha, NE, to Sacramento, CA. Due to the extreme conditions and heavy, dense snowfall, these auger-like rotary snowplows are necessary to keep the lines clear during the freezing winters on the pass. SP owned several, and even after the merger with Union Pacific in 1996, a few of the original rotaries are still in use, albeit with substantial modifications to keep them operable and efficient enough to be practical.
