British Rail MCV & MDV Mineral Wagons

The MCV Mineral Wagons were designed by the Ministry of Transport during World War 2, as they insisted that the some 60,000 big-four mineral wagons needed to be replaced by modern, high capacity wagons. The MCVs went on to replace the 5-planks, 7-planks, 9-planks and other similar wagons. They were used on a range of traffic such as coke and coal. They were eventually phased out by the introduction of the MGR series of hoppers including the HAA, HMA and other HOP-32 variants. There were over 350000 of these wagons built, and if they were all strung into one consist, it would span almost from John-O-Groats to Lands End... and back again... They were used for departmental work, and the last one was taken off the mainline in 1998, many examples survive on preserved lines, and abandoned, as BR managed to lose several thousand of them.
