History:
The name of this city comes from that of a Kushan empire founded by the Tokharians in this region. These people have left many remains, including ruins of Buddhist monasteries and caves carved into cliffs. The most prestigious site is that of the Kizil caves, located 75 km north-west of the city. The kingdom of Koutcha was a stopover on the Silk Road. It was not a city-state, contrary to what many authors have written: besides its capital, it included several large cities. In the 9th century, the Uighurs, a Turkish speaking people, after the fall of the Uighur Khaganat on present-day Mongolia (744 - 848), driven out by the Kyrgyz, settled on the territory of this kingdom and assimilated the Tokharans.
