DA 1471 is the highest-numbered and youngest DA to have been preserved. She was built by General Motors of Canada in 1963, and her service life was mostly spent hauling general freight service up and down the North Island Main Trunk, like the rest of the DA class.

1471 was renumbered to DA 725 sometime in the early 1980’s though - frustratingly - I can’t find out the exact year. Soon after the renumbering, 725 was repainted in the International Orange livery, like some other unrebuilt DA’s.

The engine remained in service well past 1988, the final full year of service for the few remaining unrebuilt DA’s. She was retained as a heritage unit at Palmerston North depot, from where she would haul occasional freight trains until being leased to Steam Incorporated in 2002. Following this change, she was sent to Masterton for storage and restoration.

Toll Rail recalled DA 1471 in 2007 and placed her in storage at Hutt Workshops. The aim was to assess her for a possible return to service. But this never happened, and the locomotive was subject to much deterioration, but - thankfully - this wasn’t the end of the line for her.

Steam Incorporated stepped in and purchased DA 1471 in 2012, now owning three of the six preserved DA’s. Nowadays 1471 is housed at the Paekakariki depot and is gradually being restored back to operational condition. Once this is done she will join classmates 1410 and 1431 in excursion service.
