MC's South Kasai

In the turmoil that followed Congolese independence from Belgium in 1960, the fledgling state quickly devolved into strife and civil war. The mineral-rich southeast declared independence as Katanga, and the remainder of the country was split between two competing governments in the west and the east. Seeing an opportunity, the small region of South Kasai - now a borderland between Congo and Katanga - declared itself to be an autonomous mining state under the rule of President Albert Kalonji. The state invoked its ethnic traditions of the Baluba people, who had long been marginalised by successive Belgian and Congolese governments, with Kalonji soon taking the title of Mulopwe (or God Emperor). Ultimately, they were short lived, and the state lasted less than three years before being absorbed back into a newly reunited Congo.
