History:
Despite its small size, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is an authentic state with a particularly rich history. Located in the heart of Europe, between France, Belgium and Germany, it has participated in major European developments. The eventful past of the Grand Duchy is a true compendium of European history. Its history begins with the first human occupations of the territory corresponding to the current country. To the groups present since the Paleolithic and the Neolithic, were added, in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, successive waves of Celts, then in the 3rd century of German peoples (Riparian Franks and, probably also Alamans). In the Middle Ages, four of its princes wore the crown of the Holy Roman Empire. During modern times, its fortress has been a major stake in the struggle between the great powers. Before gaining independence in the 19th century, Luxembourg lived successively under Burgundian, Spanish, French, Austrian and again French sovereignty, and, due to the personal union, Dutch, although the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, established in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna, was a member state of the Germanic Confederation (until its dissolution in 1866). Between 1842 and 1918, Luxembourg, gradually moving from mainly agrarian activities to heavy industry (iron and steel), became part of the Zollverein (German customs union dominated by Prussia). In the 20th century, this meanwhile prosperous and dynamic country played a catalytic role in the drive for European integration.
