Ostentor gate from Regensburg

Ostentor gate, built from 1284 on the eastern edge of today's old town of Regensburg Germany, was one of six gate towers of the former Regansburg city ​​fortifications. The gothic gatehouse was erected by members of the Regensburg Dombauhütte according to the stonemason's marks found. It is one of the best preserved gothic city ​​gates found in German cities today. The gate was built over an arterial road leading east to Vienna, and the emperor of the Holy Roman empire would use the gate to enter the city from Vienna.

During the Thirty Years' War, when Regensburg was threatened by the Swedish forces, the Ostentor gate was additionally protected by an earthwork bastion that was built in front of the medieval city walls. The earthworks were additionally protected by a moat constructed to defend the city during said war.
