(After re-making the first three Toll Rail DX's - 5172, 5379 and 5385 - I got the semi-pointless idea to make two new number variants for the Toll Rail livery).

The locomotive that is now known as DXC 5425 was originally built as DX 2640 in 1976, entering service in June 1976. General Electric was the manufacturer, and the engine was first painted in the Clockwork Orange livery, which was exclusive to the DX class. 2640 was renumbered as 5425 in 1978, as part of the introduction of the Traffic Monitoring System.

In either 1985 or 1986, DX 5425 was repainted in the International Orange livery. Not long after, the original 2-piece cab windscreen was replaced by a large 1-piece design. This was done to improve drivers' visibility, as single-man crews were being introduced at the time.

5425 was 18 years old in 1994. It was around this time when she was repainted in the New Zealand Rail blue livery. Not long after, the NZ Rail logo was replaced by the Tranz Rail logo. In the early 2000's, the locomotive was repainted in Tranz Rail black and fitted with the unusual-looking air intakes or 'chutes'. These were fitted to South Island-based DX's in a successful effort to aid crew ventilation in the Otira Tunnel.

Toll Rail came along to replace Tranz Rail in 2003, and with it came a new - and very ugly - livery of pale yellow and green. DX 5425 was repainted in this unsightly mess in March 2006. At the same time, she was reclassified as a DXB and fitted with a few extra modifications. These included General Electric's Brightstar engine management system, upgraded drawgear and a new cab.

5425 remained in the Toll Rail livery for a few more years after the state-owned KiwiRail came along in 2008. The engine had the TR logo replaced by KiwiRail patches. It wasn't until July 2015 when the locomotive was finally repainted in the KiwiRail livery. Today she is still in service in the South Island, and is now 44 years old.
