High Resolution Cubemaps & Shadows

This is a map from Half-Life 2's campaign. I strongly recommend having played the original game first before experiencing this.

The de-facto map where I showcase the maximum extent of the Source Engine's static lighting system using GMod's 64bit compile tools. Features 256x256 resolution cubemaps and the highest resolution shadows possible without the compile tools throwing errors due to to many vertices or faces being to complex for lightmaps.

Compiled for LDR & HDR and retains full functionality as long as you have Half-Life 2 purchased & installed on Steam, and mounted in Garry's Mod. Also includes a navmesh.

Progressing backwards upon spawning in will take you to d1_canals_12_hrcs if you are subscribed to it. Completing the level as you would in Half-Life 2 will take you to map d1_eli_01_hrcs if you are subscribed to it.

Map name is d1_canals_13_hrcs and can be found in the "Half-Life 2" map tab

Misc info/trivia:
  • This can somehow run on an Ancient GTX 660 at 1440p maxed out (with widely varying levels of performance)
  • With a Ryzen 5 3600x, this map takes around a hour and a half to compile with the 64bit compile tools ( VIS = ~22 minutes, each VRAD pass = ~30). With a Ryzen 9 5950x, this map takes less than an hour to compile ( VIS = 18 minutes, each VRAD pass = ~13 minutes)
  • If Half-Life 2: Update ever comes out with a (good) Cascading Shadow-Map update, most of the shadow changes here will be obsolete in comparison (indoor shadows unaffected)
  • Unknown to some people, Half-Life 2 has been majorly updated multiple times over the years, the 2004 release version has a more dated look to some models (Vortigaunts and weapon veiwmodels of specific note)
  • This map is not from a decompile

always loved the atmosphere of the game wouldn't really use the word "aged" as i think it has a appeal to it

Oh it definitely would, cubemaps seem to consistently take up half of the file size of HRCS maps, but not including them would just make it a HRS map lol, and providing a separate addon/standalone download would not only mean having to maintain 2 versions of every map in case I find a fixable bug or go back and improve the maps further, but also fragment the already niche group of people who subscribe to these addons.

These maps are for folks who have no qualms regarding their internet connection/speed, are willing to stomach tens of gigabytes of map files on their computer, and have a computer beefy enough to actually traverse the map.

The only thing that change was the shadows and lighting placement. Honestly the newer version looks worse.
