Before the Spaniards went and did their Conquering thing on the Philippine archipelago, the island was originally called Buglas but was christened by the colonists as Negros ( which is derived from Negra: Spanish word for the color black) referring to the dark skinned natives that lived on the island. And no, the word Negros is NOT offensive to the Filipinos. It's just offensive to people who think the name of the island sounds demeaning to them.
