NXT debuted in early 2010 as a cross between a wrestling show and a reality competition. Rookies from FCW were paired up with pros from the WWE roster. The winner of the competition was to receive a title shot in the WWE.

Justin Gabriel, an aerial specialist, made it into the final three competitors before being eliminated. Right after the season ended, Gabriel joined the rest of the NXT roster in an invasion of Monday Night Raw, attacking John Cena and establishing The Nexus as a dominant stable.

Gabriel ended up winning the WWE Tag Team Championships while part of the stable, capturing the belts alongside Heath Slater.
