The E 44 series was a universal locomotive series and the first electric locomotive series in Germany, of which more than 100 were purchased. It also represents a milestone in the development of electric locomotives, because for the first time there was no main axle on a larger mainline locomotive and the Tatzlager drive, which had been successful for many years, was established. The machines proved to be very robust and reliable and were used by the Deutsche Bundesbahn until 1984.
