"Suursaari aka Gogland[en.wikipedia.org] or Hogland (Russian: Гогланд; Finnish: Suursaari; Swedish: Hogland, Estonian: Suursaar, German: Hochland) is an island in the Gulf of Finland in the eastern Baltic Sea, about 180 km west from Saint Petersburg and 35 km from the coast of Finland (near Kotka). It has an area of approximately 21 km2 (8.1 sq mi); its highest point is 173 m (568 ft). The island has been inhabited by ethnic Finns since at least the 16th century, but it has changed hands several times.
During World War II the Battle of Suursaari[en.wikipedia.org] was fought over the frozen Gulf of Finland on and around the islands of Suursaari and Bolshoy Tyuters (Finnish: Suur-Tytärsaari). After sharp fighting the numerically superior Finnish forces liberated both islands, and later provided support for German forces defending Bolshoy Tyuters against Soviet counterattacks. After the attack had been repulsed the Finns left the island to the Germans, who occupied it until they evacuated Estonia in 1944. Though the operation to capture Gogland had succeeded, the overall goal of capturing all the main islands in the Eastern Gulf of Finland failed, as the German forces needed for the operation were required to defend against Soviet counter-offensives on the Leningrad Front."
