If you mount it on a platform saddle (for instance, a Tek Stryder - I installed shielding on an Excavation+Attractor model to let it mine the rich metal and polymer deposits down there), and enable the shield before entering the radiation zone, the mount will be fully affected by the radiation when it enters. Only by enabling the shield inside the radiation zone can the mount be protected.
Furthermore, the protection expires immediately if you dismount, requiring you to toggle the shield off and on again. (Fortunately, Stryders have gobs of HP, so the damage is negligible...) I haven't tested yet whether other tames would interact correctly with the shield, as none of the other players I'm with are currently available to bring a second Stryder into the cave.
