The Illinois Central Railroad was a Class 1 railroad in the central United States, connecting Chicago, Illinois, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. It's primary passenger lines were between Chicago - St. Louis and Chicago - New Orleans. In 1998 the Illinois Central was acquired by the Canadian National Railway.

The Illinois Central Railroad introduced the original City of New Orleans on April 27, 1947. It was a daytime, all-coach companion to the overnight Panama Limited. When Amtrak assumed operation of U.S. passenger train service on May 1, 1971, it dropped the Panama Limited in favor of retaining the City of New Orleans on the traditional daytime schedule.

The Steve Goodman song called "The City of New Orleans" is about the Illinois Central days of the passenger train
