Operation Amherst

In April 1945, the Germans were retreating from the northern Netherlands. French and British SAS troops have been paradropped ahead of the advancing Canadian 1st Army into the provinces of Drenthe and Friesland to secure bridges over canals and perform hit and run attacks on the retreating Germans.

The village of Spier is strategically located on the main road. It must be secured to ensure a swift advance of the Canadian 1st Army. Capturing the village of Smalbroek will further disrupt the German retreat.
