The vanilla soul link mechanic makes multiplayer far more easier than singleplayer already. You get several more lifes instead of just having one. I would prefer a different mechanic though: either let people stay dead until the next boss has been defeated or let the group have a shared life (not hp) pool - let's say one life per player. When all group-lifes are eaten up, the next death end's the run.
I guess you could even build a mod for that (I have no experience there): The host has a counter which gets reduced on each death. Once it reaches zero, the whole group sends "kill" via mod into the console. This way, no one has to spectate and deaths are still meaningful.
