Tranz Metro Class 150 (Coach 1)

Tranz Metro was a commuter train operator that - in its final form - was a division of KiwiRail. It came into being in 1985, during the restructuring of the railways. When Tranz Metro was first introduced, it ran under the name CityRail, and wasn't re-named until 1995. They operated commuter trains in both Wellington and Auckland. Connex (later Veolia and eventually Transdev) took over the Auckland trains in 2004, leaving Tranz Metro's responsibility lying solely on Wellington services.

The company ceased to be in July 2016, when it was taken over by Transdev Wellington. This company still operates the commuter services today. A more comprehensive look at Tranz Metro's history can be found here (and yes, sources are cited at the bottom of the page):

This re-skin is based primarily on the EM/ET class, otherwise known as the Ganz Mavag electric multiple units. 44 of these units were built in Budapest (the Hungarian capital) between 1979 and 1983, with the first unit entering service in June 1982. The class went on to give 34 years of service to Wellington commuters (and out-of-towners like me), and were retired in 2016. The FP/FT 'Matangi' class were brought into replace the older trains.

Out of the 44 Ganz Mavag units built, 26 have been scrapped so-far, while 17 were exported to South Africa in February 2014. Thankfully two of these units have survived into preservation - EM 1373/ET 3373 and EM 1505/ET 3505.
