Okay, I'll try the newer version and see how it goes.
The newer one adds a lot of words and phrases for room names (and associated decorations), artifact names, artifact descriptions, taunts said by enemies, and the infobox that pops up when you find the pocket dimension key. However among those new things are a handful of political references, a few swears, and a couple of jokes that are in questionable taste (IIRC a couple of the wizard names for the portal key are puns on the names of famous murderers or famous tyrants and there's also some toilet humor), and it is primarily because of these that I included the throwback option.
(Additionally, some of the decorations block movement and I'm pretty sure the new version has a slightly different percentage of room options that include these than the original did, so there could be some very marginal difference in gameplay between the two)
