Pennsylvania Railroad Side Rod

The basic PRR black (or, as some sources say, brunswick green) livery, as carried by smaller diesel locomotives that served on the Pennsy system. Some of these were the EMD GP7, GP9 and SW1, as well as the unsightly Fairbanks-Morse H12-44. The E44 class electric locomotives also carried the standard PRR black or brunswick green, depending on how good your eyes are.

The Pennsylvania Railroad is one of the more well-known 'fallen flag' American railroads. It was first established in 1846, and it acquired, merged with or owned part of at least 800 other rail companies as the years went by. One formidable rival of the Pennsy was the New York Central, who would later merge with the PRR in 1968. This merger was named Penn Central, and turned out to be a financial disaster. In 1970, PC was in such a bad state that it became involved in the largest bankrupcty in US history.

Going back to the PRR GP9 locomotives, there are at least three of the ex-Pennsy engines in preservation. 7000 is owned by the United Railroad Historical Society and operates on the Cape May Seashore Lines in New Jersey. 7006 is on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, and 7048 is on display at the Horseshoe Curve near Altona, Pennsylvania. 7048 sits on the spot that was formally occupied by K4 class 4-6-2 No. 1361.
