Yes, unfortunately fenghuang, vermilion bird, and phoenix are 3 distinct creatures which are often confused for each other, even their Wikipedia articles makes that mistake which makes it difficult and frustrating to find accurate information.

The fenghuang, as I understand it, isn't really associated with fire or rebirth, and is more just the feminine counterpart to the Chinese dragon. But I'm only just now learning about them and the vermilion bird.

Mh. Yes, the are apparently confused with each other. I have found sources for both that describe each as mostly red but with feathers of 5 different colors, always covered in fire, but there seems to be a clear distinction between each in how they're represented in their respective myths. Could their mutual origin have been lost in translation/history, or are their appearance just coincidentally similar?
It's also odd how similar they are to the Phoenix as it is described by the Greeks.

Either way it's a nice retexture. I'll give it a go.

From my research, Fenghuang is the bird with a 5 colored plumage but the vermilion bird is, as the name suggests, vermilion red.

A nice retexture, though I think I'd prefer a version with everything but the completely red retexture. After all, the Vermilion Bird is said to have been similar in appearance to a pheasant , with a plumage of primarily red, but also four other different colors, always encased in flames.
