KiwiRail is a state-owned company that operates the rail network in New Zealand. Their reach does not include heritage railways, as those are all run by not-for-profit societies. The railways were re-nationalised in July 2008, and the KiwiRail name/company is still going strong almost 12 years on.

They operate freight and long-distance passenger trains in both the North and South Islands, but their so-called 'Golden Triangle' is the Auckland to Hamilton and Tauranga route, which is a) in the North Island and b) my local line. The section from Hamilton to Tauranga (the East Coast Main Trunk) is freight-only, and it's been like that since 2001.

KiwiRail's livery is a simple combination of yellow, grey and red. This is arranged in many different ways depending on the locomotive type. By far the most common arrangement is the Mk2 variant, which has vertical separation of grey and red. The early version of the livery (as applied to one DC, one DFT and five DX's) has horizontal separation.

The livery on this Side Rod locomotive is based on the version carried by KiwiRail's main shunters - the DSC, DSG and DSJ classes. As for the number on this re-skin, it is that of a real-life Hitachi Side Rod engine.
