Here is my idea of how the Hitach Side Rod locomotive would look if it ran in New Zealand in the 1980's. It is NOT intended to be a direct copy of the first NZR Side Rod, which was made by Franks/Gaugepunk himself.

International Orange - despite its name - was actually red instead of orange. It was - and still is - a classic livery in New Zealand, and was the standard on NZ Rail diesel (and electric) locomotives from 1978 to sometime in the 1990's. The very first locomotive to receive the livery was DX 2612, later DXB 5137. International Orange - often nicknamed 'Fruit Salad' - went on to be carried by a huge variety of classes. Curiously the DJ class was the only significant diesel class never to carry this livery. The DJ's had blue instead of red, for some reason.

An awful lot of locomotives remained in Fruit Salad right into the 21st century, some of which are as follows:

DBR 1199
DBR 1200
DBR 1213
DBR 1239
DBR 1241
DBR 1254
DBR 1267
DBR 1282
DC 4029
DC 4064
DC 4070
DC 4133
DC 4156
DC 4260
DC 4409
DC 4876
DX 5229
DX 5235 (now rebuilt as DXR 8022)
DX 5379
DX 5419
DX 5477
EF 30007
EF 30059
EF 30094
EF 30105
EF 30111
EF 30140
EF 30157
EF 30163
EF 30203
EF 30232
TR 367
TR 436
TR 839
TR 851

Most of these locomotives have either been repainted (e.g. DC 4260, DX 5419 and EF 30163), preserved (e.g. DC 4876 and TR 367), withdrawn (e.g. DBR 1200) or scrapped (e.g. DC's 4064 and 4070). Today there are still at least seven operational locomotives carrying the Fruit Salad livery. DC 4409 is the last operational mainline diesel still in this livery, while EF's 30007, 30094, 30105, 30140 and 30232 (and possibly other EF's) are still in Fruit Salad too. This is impressive - especially in the EF's case - since that means these engines have never been repainted in a different livery.
