ConRail was a Class 1 railroad in the United States of America, more specifically in the Northeast US. It operated trains from 1976 to 1999. The company was created after the infamous collapse of Penn Central, which was a merger of the Pennsylvania, New York Central and New Haven Railroads.

The company was actually created by the Federal Government, but ended up getting privatised in 1987. 10 years later CSX and Norfolk Southern - the two leading Class 1 railroads in the North East - agreed to jointly purchase ConRail, with CSX taking 42% and Norfolk Southern taking 58% of the company. ConRail was divided between CSX and NS in 1999, but still does business today as an asset manager and network services provider. Presumably the latter means track maintenance.

More recently - in 2012 - Norfolk Southern had one of their locomotives painted in the old ConRail blue livery, with the intention of running it as a heritage unit. This was General Electric ES44AC No. 8098, and she is still running in ConRail blue today.
