Open the file "eds" in common/ship_sizes and take note of the following lines:
size_multiplier = 0.15
fleet_slot_size = 0.15
I changed both numbers to 1 just to be safe, and it no longer crashes when I split the fleets.
If I change just one of them to 1 and leave the other as 0.15, depending on which one I changed the game will either continue to count each drone unit as a fleet size of 1 or outright crash to desktop when I select the drones. So for now I recommend you change them both to 1.
