Developed along with all other "Mod. 35" grenades used by the Italian army,the SCRM was designated as an offensive grenade,meaning it was meant to be thrown while on the move and advancing.For this purpose,it had a throwing range of about 20 meters,and a kill range of less than 10 meters.These grenades had several safety features,but the "on impact" trigger had reliability problems,and sometimes failed to detonate.In fact,the British sometimes believed they were placed as mines due to the tendency of unexploded ones to blow up after being taken from the ground.In fact,they could be "modified" to be used as mines,usually just placing them in an spot where someone could step,and carefully removing the safety rubber pin.The British in North Africa nicknamed them "red devils" due to their distinctive paint;although it was also used by the Italian Marines (who fought mainly in North Africa),with a different white and red paint.There was also an smoke variant,which was painted yellow
