This is the 2nd update to my Tranz Rail Black DX reskin. As with the two recent KiwiRail revisions, this one has been updated to use my new standard texture sets.

DX 5270 was built by General Electric in 1975, and was originally numbered as DX 2620. She arrived in New Zealand in February 1976 and entered service shortly after. DX 2620 was only three years old when she was renumbered as DX 5229 in 1978, as part of the (then) new Traffic Monitoring System. As with all other 48 DX's, 2620 first carried the distinctive Clockwork Orange livery. In 1985, the locomotive was repainted into the more common International Orange. Unfortunatley DX 5229 was involved in a nasty head-on collision with classmate DX 5235 in December 2000, which took place at Annex Road in Christchurch. 5235 was rebuilt as DXR 8022, and re-entered service in 2005. As for DX 5229, she was rebuilt as a standard DX in 2001.

The rebuilding work involved repainting the locomotive in Tranz Rail Black and the fitting of 'chutes' or air-intakes. These are exclusive to the DXC subclass, and are used to help with crew ventilation in the Otira Tunnel. The last significant modification was the installation of General Electric's Brightstar engine management system. As if all that wasn't enough, 5229 also lost her traditional curved short-hood in favour of a less-attractive DFT-style hood, which she still carries today.

DXC 5229 carried the Tranz Rail Black livery right up until 2012, when she was finally repainted in KiwiRail colours. The locomotive is still in service as of January 2020.

The 1st updated version of my DXC 5229 reskin has appeared in one of Frantic's videos:
