History:
Metropolis was founded as a colony of pilgrim fathers. After the original colony was destroyed by a catastrophic fire - here indicated between the lines that it was caused by a meteorite impact - the surviving settlers would have their city, along with the members of a local Indian tribe, whose chief had an ancestor of Lex Luthor had been newly founded. In the 1880s, the city had been the scene of violent ethnic conflicts between Irish and Anglo-Saxon residents. On the eve of the First World War, the city had become a center of the steel industry of the United States and one of the main suppliers of steel for the war. During the Great Depression Metropolis had been plagued by severe devastation of the economic disruption of the time. The impoverishment of large parts of the population was so severe that some quarters of the city, the Suicide Slum, could not recover from the aftermath of the Superman adventures. In the year 2000, the city, which calls itself the "City of Tomorrow", is literally transformed into a city of the future, as the time traveler Brainiac 13 transforms it on New Year's Eve 1999 with its futuristic technology within less Hours transformed into a city modeled on the cities of his time. Brainiac accomplishes this technical miracle by infecting the building fabric of the city with a kind of positive computer virus, which upgrades all buildings and their furnishings in a very short time. Normal skyscrapers were so to art interspersed metal and glass collars, from manual to open doors to electric doors after the model in spaceship films such as Star Trek, normal interior to elaborate, self-thinking, the residents all chores independently decreasing high-tech facilities etc...
