Designed early during the 20th century,the Chauchat-Sutter machine rifle was pushed into service due to France's lack of light machine guns.The weapon had a number of problems,the first being the open sided magazine,which made it relatively easy for the gun to jam due to mud and dirt getting inside.There were also problems with automatic fire,as sustaining it led to the barrel sleeve getting stuck as it suffered thermal expansion.Later on in the war,when combat became more mobile (mid-1918),the Chauchat showed it's potential as an squad automatic weapon,and full squads of Chauchat gunners were assembled with the intent of suppressing German fixed machine guns.After WW1,many other countries used them,including Poland,Belgium or Greece.During WW2,it was used again,even by the Germans.
