FULMINATING GOLD

Otherwise known as explosive gold, this was the very first high explosive known to humanity. Discovered by alchemists in the late 1500's, it has since been subject to centuries of research. According to one study: "Probably almost every chemist of the 19th century once worked on fulminating gold". Yet, despite this wide body of research, chemists still can't describe it with a chemical equation to this day.
