Designed as a replacement for British built Sten guns,the Austen was based on an MP40 and Sten,it was meant to be a cheap smg for the Australian army.It was never as reliable as the Owen (though more so than the Sten),and it was generally regarded a way worse weapon by soldiers,to the point that after 1945 most guns were simply stored
