Ranked Pack RP Ranks Guide
由 シャドウ 制作
A guide for ranked pack rp to get everyone on the same page. Keep in mind that REAL WOLF PACKS IN REAL LIFE DON'T HAVE RANKS and function more like a family, however, people still enjoy using ranks in rp. The problem with this is I see a lot of people mis-ranking, saying something is one thing when it is another, and sometimes just not understanding what each rank is since so many people play a different way.

This should hopefully clear things up, since these ideas from person to person cause pointless arguments and confusion amongst other players. My goal with this is to get as many people on the same page as possible to try and eliminate some of the possible arguing and debating, bring back some simplicity and peace in the game.

General Understanding of Ranked RP

To the best of most of your knowledge ranked pack rp is a type of rp on WolfQuest multiplayer, probably one of the most popular types of rp themes, that involves having a pack of unrelated wolves who all hold a certain rank and dominance level in the pack. Alpha being the highest rank and Omega being the lowest rank.

This is a good bit to start with however let's go over some misconceptions about real wolves real quick. One of the most common random arguments I see happen in these rps is someone will say this rank is this while someone else says this rank is that. Now take a moment and think about how pointless this type of argument is. Everyone roleplays differently and when it comes to ranked rp some use the classic ranking hierarchy while others go by forum lists and online things they read about pack ranks preferring to believe that as fact.

The funny thing about this whole situation is real packs don't even have ranks, they function like families with a breeding pair who are the leaders of the pack and subordinate wolves who are the members and typically the offspring of the breeding pair. They don't have ranks and don't have any specific jobs. All wolves in the pack hunt, all wolves in the pack help with raising young, and all of the wolves in the pack help defend territory when required. Thus the reality of this is that people are arguing and bickering about stuff, stating 'facts' when wolves don't even have ranks. It seems kind of silly to argue about this stuff now that you know this, right?

That said we can get into the actual ranks guide now, I just wanted to make sure you guys are aware that these types of arguments are silly and not worth it. It is rp just have some fun, stop arguing with each other about what ranks are what and what is the right way to play a rank
Alpha Male and Alpha Female

Basics About The Rank: The Alpha rank is the rank given to the pack leader, in rp there can be one Alpha of any gender or two Alphas one of each Gender who is playing as Mates (Spouses) in the rp.

Holders of The Rank: One Male and/or One Female.

General Duties of The Rank: Leading the Pack, Making choices for the Pack, Protecting the Pack Members and Pack Territory, Rearing the Next Generation of the Pack (Pups), Bringing Out of Line Pack Members Back in Line either through means of scolding or punishment, Assessing New Members, Recruiting New Members, Training Pack Members in Fighting, Hunting, and Tracking depending on their rank, Promoting and/or Demoting Pack Members Based on Behavior and/or General Compliance.

Selection of a New Holder of The Rank: The Alpha rank can be taken through means of killing the current Alpha, Fighting the current Alpha until they back down. (If the Alpha Died) The next Alpha will be the Beta by right and by rank.

Dominance and Influence of The Rank: Alpha is the highest and most dominant rank in the pack. They have full influence over the pack.

Limitations and Benefits of The Rank:
•Benefits•
No one to answer to, you are the leader, the pack has to answer to you, respect, dominance over the other pack members, the power to demote and promote pack members as you see fit.

•Limitations•
You can NOT leave the territory at all unless you take your pack with you, you have to put up with a lot of the pack members' incompetence and mood, if you are a bad Alpha the pack or a few pack members may go against you and have the pack follow them instead of you.

Ideal RP Character Traits for The Rank: Caring, Nurturing, Protective, Stern, Fearless, Brave, Mature, Calm, Loving, Clever, Cunning, Dominant.

Privileges of The Rank: You don't have to follow the rules of the pack since you make the rules for your pack. Thus only have to follow your own rules.
Beta Male and Beta Female

Basics About The Rank: Beta is the rank given to the second in command of the pack. They are not a second-hand Alpha, but they are like a deputy of the pack, they hold quite a bit of dominance over the lower-ranked pack members. In rp sometimes there is only allowed one Beta and other times the host may allow two Beta rank holders one male and one female, unlike the alpha female and alpha male, the beta wolves do NOT have to be mates in the rp.

Holders of The Rank: One wolf of any gender or two wolves one of each gender. Playing as mates in this rank is optional, but not required.

General Duties of The Rank:Help Keep Pack Members in Line through scolding or punishment when they do something wrong, Watching Over the Pack when the Alpha is taking some time to themselves, Assisting in Recruiting New Members, Fighting off Threats and Loners as needed, Protecting the Pack Members and Territory.

Selection of a New Holder of The Rank: The Beta Rank can be taken by fighting the current beta of the same gender as your character and winning the rank in a fair fight, awarded by the Alpha for your unbroken loyalty to them and the pack if there is not yet a beta of your character's gender. (If The Beta Died) Delta or Zeta can be promoted to Beta.

Dominance and Influence of The Rank: The Beta has high dominance in the pack, though still needs to answer to the Alpha. Their influence on the pack is less than the Alpha, but more than the lower-ranked pack members.

Limitations and Benefits of The Rank:
•Benefits•
The right to tell lower-ranking pack members what to do if the Alpha okays it, free-range of the territory with no requirement to tell the alpha when you leave the den site, influence over the rules the other pack members must follow.

•Limitations•
You can NOT leave the territory AT ALL and must stay with the pack at all times, You still need to listen to the Alpha but the other pack members hold no authority over you, you can be demoted and even completely stripped of rank all together if you are a bad Beta.

Ideal RP Character Traits for The Rank:Protective, Stern, Loyal, Compassionate, Brave, Fearless, Cunning, Clever, Calculated.

Privileges of The Rank: Free range of the territory and the power over other pack members. You can go where ever you want in the territory without having to notify the Alpha of your adventures provided you stay in the territory.
Theta/Lead Medic

Basics About The Rank:The Theta is the lead medic of the pack and the pack member with the most healing knowledge out of the medics. They have been practicing the art of healing for a very long time and are probably the best at it in the pack. In rp, Theta is most commonly a single person rank meaning that only one can hold the rank in the rp, but others are okay with doing it similar to the Beta rank and allowing one male theta and one female theta.

Holders of The Rank: Commonly only One Wolf of Any Gender. Rarely Two Wolves One of Each Gender.

General Duties of The Rank: Treating sick and injured pack members, diagnosing ill pack members by their conditions, assisting in birthing pups when a female in the pack is ready to have her pups, training yearlings who wish to be a Medic when they are old enough to hold a rank.

Selection of a New Holder of The Rank: Theta is a rank that can be claimed through doing much for your pack in terms of treating them and caring for them. Theta can not be taken away from a pack member unless the Alpha strips them of the rank for incompetence, using their skills to hurt pack members instead of helping them, and/or poor skill in healing.

Dominance and Influence of The Rank: Theta is a neutral dominance level, meaning while they are respected by the pack, they have no official authority over the rest of the pack members unlike the Alpha and Beta wolves.

Limitations and Benefits of The Rank:
•Benefits•
Trust and respect from the rest of the pack, free-range of the territory, ability to take trips to find more healing herbs outside the territory with the permission of the Alpha.
•Limitations•
Required to always notify the Alpha of where you are going if you are going to be traveling outside of the territory borders, no official power over the lower-ranking pack members, can be stripped of your rank for messing up one too many times.

Ideal RP Character Traits for The Rank: Caring, Compassionate, Nurturing, Clever, Cheerful, Loving, Protective, Kind.

Privileges of The Rank: Thetas have the right to leave the territory more than the other wolves to find herbs for healing, thus more adventure. You do need to let your Alpha know where you are going still.
Zeta/Lead Warrior

Basics About The Rank: Zeta is the rank given to the lead warrior of the pack. Warriors are typically in charge of defending the territory from loners and pack invasions in rp. In rp some choose to only allow one Zeta of any gender, others allow two Zetas one of each gender.

Holders of The Rank: Commonly Only One Wolf of Any Gender. Rarely Two Wolves One of Each Gender.

General Duties of The Rank: Protecting the territory from loners by fighting and sometimes killing the loners, managing the borders of the territory for any threats, training yearlings who wish to be a Warrior when they are old enough to hold a rank.

Selection of a New Holder of The Rank: Zeta is given by the Alpha to the pack member who is the best at fighting. The Zeta is an outstanding combat expert and would have fought many battles and won before being promoted to Zeta.

Dominance and Influence of The Rank: Zeta only holds dominance over the other Warriors in the pack, they have no authority over any pack member that is not a Warrior and are required to listen to the Alpha and Beta wolves of the pack.

Limitations and Benefits of The Rank:
•Benefits•
The right to rule over the other Warriors in the pack also called 'Sub-Warriors', Ability to go a bit beyond pack territory with permission from the Alpha or Beta to check for any threats that could be incoming close to the territory.

•Limitations•
ALWAYS must listen to the Alpha or may get demoted, can NOT leave the territory without permission and set return time, is required to listen to the Beta as well as the Alpha at times.

Ideal RP Character Traits for The Rank: Protective, Cunning, Clever, Tactical, Calculated, Remorseful, Alert, Energetic, Adventurous.

Privileges of The Rank: Zeta has full charge over the other Warriors in the pack, thus are kind of like their own Alpha amongst the warriors, however, both Warriors and the Zeta need to listen to the actual Alpha.
Delta/Lead Hunter

Basics About The Rank: Delta is the lead hunter, though some seem to think it is messenger probably because they looked up a forum post about wolf pack ranks and what they where. While it is fine to still play with Delta being messenger, some do still use it as Lead Hunter which it was originally back in the day. Some only have one Delta of any Gender, others play with two Deltas one of each gender in the rp.

Holders of The Rank: Commonly Only One Wolf of Any Gender. Rarely Two Wolves One of Each Gender.

General Duties of The Rank: Hunting and bring down kills for the pack, keeping track of the pack's nearby herd population, defending the hunting grounds from petty loners trying to hunt or overhunting, rallying other hunters in the pack for larger hunts, training pack members to hunt successfully.

Selection of a New Holder of The Rank: Delta is given to the best hunter in the pack, these are usually older wolves with a passion and drive to hunt. Delta can be taken by another hunter in the pack who is doing a better job hunting than the current Delta. Sometimes elder wolves step down from Delta and will elect one of their best hunters to take their place.

Dominance and Influence of The Rank: The Delta holds no dominance over pack members and is only in charge of the other Hunters in the pack.

Limitations and Benefits of The Rank:
•Benefits•
More hunting trips and adventures to other hunting grounds sometimes, free-range on the hunting grounds nearest to your territory, respect from the rest of the hunters.

•Limitations•
Must ask the Alpha or Beta to hunt, can NOT hunt for sport, must stay close to the territory, will often get sent out on hunting trips even if you don't want to go, can have your rank stripped away from you if you fail to do your job well.

Ideal RP Character Traits for The Rank: Calculated, Cunning, Clever, Energetic, Brave, Mature, Tactical.

Privileges of The Rank: Deltas have the full say in hunting trips and what to take down, provided the Alpha okays their methods and plans.
Gamma/Lead Scout

Basics About The Rank: Gamma is a lead scout and responsible for the tracking and patroling part of managing a territory. Some say Gamma is Elder, but Elder is not a rank and is more a life stage. Why the majority of forums try saying Gamma is Elder in ranked pack rp I am not sure, maybe because Gamma sounds like "Grandma" or "Grandpa"? Either way, it was originally Lead Scout which was like an Army Commander in the ranking system which in my opinion is even better than Elder. Most only allow one Gamma, but some allow two, one male and one female in rp. Scouts, in general, are similar to Warriors however Warriors go after Loners and other wolves, whereas Scouts deal with bears, cougars, and coyotes.

Holders of The Rank: Commonly Only One Wolf of Any Gender. Rarely Two Wolves One of Each Gender.

General Duties of The Rank: Training yearlings that wish to be Scouts when they are old enough to hold a rank, keeping watch for any bears or other predators, alerting the rest of the pack when there is a problem, coming up with tactics for dealing with pack wars.

Selection of a New Holder of The Rank: Gamma is given to the best Tracker and second-best Fighter in the pack by the Alpha. They often have plenty of tracking experience on their records and know how to outsmart enemies. Gamma can be taken by challenging the current Gamma to a fair fight and winning or doing the job better than the Gamma.

Dominance and Influence of The Rank: Gamma only holds dominance over the other Scouts in the pack. They hold no authority over any other wolves in the pack.

Limitations and Benefits of The Rank:
•Benefits•
Can travel further than the pack's territory with permission from the Alpha, has power over the other Scouts in the pack.

•Limitations•
Can NOT leave the territory without permission and a set return time.

Ideal RP Character Traits for The Rank: Protective, Calculated, Clever, Loyal, Stern, Mature, Remorseful, Adventurous, Alert.

Privileges of The Rank: Gammas can scout out territory for the pack outside of their usual territory range for days with permission from the Alpha, thus they do not need to always stay in the territory or near the territory as long as they have the Alpha's permission.
Subordinate Ranks (Warrior, Scout, Medic, Hunter.)

Subordinate ranks are just another word for ranks that are not leading ranks but are still ranks. Some people give fancy names to these ranks, however, I am going to keep it simple and use more basic words. Once again the reminder that real packs do not have ranks, so don't argue with other people you play with about this topic, please.

•Healer/Medic•
Healer/Medic is the term used for non-Theta healers, they are typically apprentices of the Theta and learned what they know from the Theta. They don't have to be outstandingly skilled with healing but are required to know enough to rank them as a healer/medic.

•Warrior•
Warrior is the subordinate rank to Zeta, they are the rest of the pack members that specialize in fighting and combat. Warriors have to answer to the Zeta like they would their Alpha, however, the Zeta has to answer to the Alpha.

•Hunter•
Hunters are exactly how they sound, though all wolves in the pack can hunt typically, hunters specialize in this and practice hunting until they perfect it. Hunters are the rest of the pack members that are the best at hunting just under the Delta.

•Scout•
Scouts are the sub ranked pack members to the Gamma. They do all the same work as the Gamma only doesn't have as much responsibility as the Gamma does. Their job is to work together to ward off non-wolf threats and specialize in fighting animals that are not of their own species.
Omega Male and Omega Female

Basics About The Rank: The Omega is the lowest ranking member in the pack, but this does not make the Omega wolf any less important than the other pack members. Omegas are typically responsible for keeping the peace between their pack members. Omegas are sometimes the punching bags for their pack members in certain peoples' rp and in other peoples' rps they are simply a low ranking member who is a peacekeeper for the pack. It is a 50-50 chance really of someone allowing two Omegas or only one Omega. Some like to allow a male and female omega, others like to only allow one Omega to keep things simple.

Holders of The Rank: Either One Wolf of Any Gender or Two Wolves One of Each Gender depending on who is hosting the server you are playing in.

General Duties of The Rank: Keeping tension at bay within their pack, helping destress their pack members when they are having trouble calming down, offering themselves as a chew toy to higher-ranking members when they have had it with their packmates (Only in some rps.), helping keep spirits high in hard times either by means of play or joking around.

Selection of a New Holder of The Rank: Omega is not a rank one would want to try winning in truth, but it can be given to wolves who are new to the pack or a demotion as a punishment to a higher ranking member who screwed up one too many times or had trouble following orders given by the Alpha. Again how to get Omega is purely dependent on how the host of the server you are playing in rps.

Dominance and Influence of The Rank: Omegas have zero dominance and are not in charge of anyone, they have zero authority over the pack and its members.

Limitations and Benefits of The Rank:
•Benefits•
Hardly any work since they will be made to stay at the den site most of the time and are meant to submit to their higher-ranked packmates.

•Limitations•
They can NOT EVER leave the territory, they have to do what they are told at all times, they have no authority or power in the pack, they have to go where they are told, they always have to ask permission for pretty much everything.

Ideal RP Character Traits for The Rank: Caring, Kind, Playful, Energetic, Cheerful, Loyal, Hyper, Friendly, Compassionate.

Privileges of The Rank: Omegas, unfortunately, have no privileges and are often treated similar to pups within the pack in rp.

What about Kappa, Messenger, and Peacekeeper?!
Now we get to the newer ranks that people have implemented into the RP in more recent months. Keep in mind people will still keep making up ranks for the RP as they go, which will most likely cause more confusion and complication for those newer to Ranked Pack RP. Unfortunately, this can't be helped, the least you can do to try and not confuse people is try to stay on the same page as them or stick to simplistic ranks when you host a Ranked Pack RP server. I will still go over some of these other little bits and pieces though to try and help you guys out.

•Kappa•
"What is Kappa! Isn't that Lead Hunter?! What be this witchcraft!? Delta?! Never!" I hear you shouting from the other side of the screen. No worries, let me explain.

This is a Kappa:

And this:

Fine, fine! Just messing with you. But in all seriousness, I have seen Kappa start-up somewhere around late 2018 and then it became more prevalent later in 2019. In truth, Delta was always Lead Hunter and only seemed to be misnamed as being called Kappa more recently. Most likely one of those fan-made pack rank lists are to blame for this, it is fine if you still prefer to use Kappa as Lead Hunter, go for it when hosting your servers. But don't try getting into a debate with a server host in a server you joined and did not host if the server host still uses Delta as Lead Hunter. Most older fans of the game who still play it though, will call Lead Hunter 'Delta', not 'Kappa'.

•Delta as Messanger•
This one is most likely the result of Kappa being used and is probably tied to what I just told you about Kappa. Newer players started using Kappa for Lead Hunter due to a list they read, "But wait! Delta is still circulating, what rank could Delta mean?!" says some player who started hosting their first Ranked Pack RP as they struggle to figure out what each rank is. Trying to quickly decide as to not keep their server guests waiting "I know! Messenger! It is just rp, anything is possible!" they chant to themselves proud of what they came up with unaware of the confusion it would cause in the future as everyone begins spreading around that Delta is Messenger and others just wanting an rp just accept it to speed things along.

Now back to serious! Think about it this way... Any lower-ranking wolf in a ranked pack rp could be sent to deliver a message, you don't need special ranks for it. But as always if you prefer having messenger as a rank go right ahead, just try not to debate with other players what the rank is and why. Everyone is different and older rpers on WolfQuest half the time when I come across them never even have messengers in their pack feeling they could save that spot for a more useful rank.

•Delta as Third in Command•
Hmm, seems Delta is the one that gets misranked the most in the game for some reason. Due to a comment questioning Delta's validation as Third in commend, I decided to add on. Delta as third in command is probably a more simple situation than Delta as Messenger. In the Greek Alphabet 'Delta' is actually the forth letter, not the third. Which is rather funny when you think about it. The third letter is actually "Gamma" so I am not really sure where the whole Delta as third in command came from.

Perhaps someone was the type of player to have a problem with not being in a position of power in rp and thus tried making themselves third in command when there is already a second in command (Beta) and a first in command (Alpha). I have seen those types of players who refuse to be anything other than Alpha or Beta. They can be kind of annoying, however some people make characters with personality types to match specific ranks which would lead their wolf to HAVE to be one of those specific ranks. However there are players who don't have any valid reason to have to be a high rank and this is just them refusing to work with the hierarchy not wanting to be below any of the authority ranks I feel.

That is my best theory I have about the whole "Delta is third in command" thing. In some ways yes, Delta is another commanding presence in the pack due to being one of the group leading ranks. Delta is technically leader of the hunters in the pack but as all ranks that aren't Alpha or Beta they still need to listen to their higher ups.

•Peacekeeper?•
Peacekeeper is the most recent one I have found, unfortunately, it is so vague what players consider the jobs of a peacekeeper are that in most cases when I host an rp I just tell them if they want to break up fights between their pack members to quote on quote 'keep the peace' they can be Omega since Omegas are responsible for keeping their packmates' stress levels low and raising spirits in harder times. This one I only started seeing 2 months ago in all honestly. While I am not against a peacekeeper type rank, I don't see the point of it when Omega is pretty close to a Peacekeeper for their pack. I have no theories or ideas as to where this one started up, but oh well not that big of a deal.
Outro (Conclusion)
And that concludes this guide about Ranked Pack RP on WolfQuest, please do always remember real packs do not have ranks and function more like families. Thus there is no point in debating with others about what rank is what in rp, just have fun and roleplay. Hopefully, this guide brought people on the same page and will lessen arguments about things in the Multiplayer game.

I do hope this helped you guys out and will make your WolfQuest RP experience more fun than stressful. Enjoy your day and have fun playing WolfQuest!
