USS Midway vs. Cuba: The War That Never Was, 1989

描述
When WW3 breaks out in the early 1990s, it spreads everywhere, quickly. The Soviet Union and all of its allies begin to battle aganist NATO and its allies. One exception is Cuba, issuing an open letter of neutriality to everyone. However, what NATO does not know is that Cuba is planning on entering the war. The Soviet Union has instructed them to enter the war just as the USA is sending the first of their heavy divisions towards Europe. In the book The War That Never Was, Cuba sees the sucesses enjoyed by NATO countries/allies everywhere and decides to make their neutrality permanent. What if this never happened? What if Cuba did enter the war at this percarious moment? All that the US has standing between an entire nation's armed forces and the lifeline to Europe is the USS Midway, fitted with a scratch SAG and reserve F/A-18 squadrons.. Can they hold the line? Or will Cuba deliver the final, killing blow, and seal the fate of Europe?

Excellent little scenario that killed half an hour. My only issue was that the side briefing is black text on a dark background. Thanks man

Allan,

I'm the original scenario author. I do agree with you that the Midway would make more sense to be placed in the Pacific theater. However, in the book that this scenario is based off of (The War That Never Was), it is explicitly mentioned that the USS Midway is taken out of mothball, refitted with F/A-18 squadrons, and sent to patrol of the shores of Cuba. When making this scenario, I wanted to be as close as possible to the source material (the book) as I could, despite any inaccuracies that the book may include. Hope this helps explain my choices!

I served aboard the USS Midway, as an FC, during Desert Storm and her decommissioning in spring 1992. The Midway was a conventional carrier that was forward deployed and based out of Yokuska, Japan as part of Battle Group Alpha. Her complement of aircraft was primarily made up of F/A 18s and bombers in the form of A-6 Intruders and EA6B Intruders electronic warfare. You would do better choosing a carrier that was actually part of the Atlantic theater. Don't get me wrong, this is cool and fun but for historical accuracy an Atlantic carrier actually in service in the early 90s might be more interesting :) Great work otherwise :)

Other:
To make up for an insufficient escort and a lack of land-based aircraft, you have been given a larger supply of AIM-7M Sparrow missiles, and a squadron of experimental F/A-18D Hornets (callsigns Gladiator 1 through 12). These aircraft also can use a brand new modification to the Harpoon, the AGM-84E SLAM. You are to combat test both the aircraft and the weapon if at all possible. Any loss of a Gladiator will be met with severe punishment for you.

EMCON/Weather

Weather forecast is for clear skies calm seas.

EMCON State C: Unrestricted emissions.

Good luck commander, you will need it.

Author's Note:
I have not set up any missions for the US fighters, because I personally like to have maximum flexibility when starting a scenario. However, I strongly advise that you immediately launch a CAP, because things start happening as soon as you hit the start button! Also, you have SAMs with extremely long range. Use them wisely, as you only have so many!

Lastly, we do not know if Cuba has acquired MiG-29 aircraft, but it is a certain possibility. There are a number of other aircraft, but HUMINT has indicated that these squadrons are assigned to a coastal patrol only. Do not overfly Cuba as we believe that these planes will not attack you.

Civilians:
WWIII has been raging for a long time, and all civilian aircraft have either grounded themselves after the Cuban declaration of war this morning, or are being used to ferry men to Europe. All aircraft and ships in your AO are assumed hostile.

MISSION:
You are to neutralize Cuba’s striking power at all costs. Cuba has not attacked Guantanamo Bay, and we are taking this as a sign of goodwill. If we do not attack Cuba on land, they will not overrun our base. DO NOT ATTACK CUBAN AIRBASES OR SAM SITES WHATSOEVER.

No S-3 Vikings however, they are needed elsewhere. Your escort consists of 3 FFGs, 1 CG, and 1 FF. US submarines located in your AO are tasked on a separate mission, and will not be under your command. They know where you will be operating, so you can count on any submarines that you encounter on being hostile

Enemy Force:
Cuba has a number of coastal patrol ships and missile boats, including the deadly Osa II. We can safely assume that these boats are headed to attack you. Cuba also has roughly 3 dozen MiG-23s that can be armed with ASM, so keep a steady CAP. 3 submarines have been reported in your AO, but this report is unconfirmed.

For this scenario, the US has only the USS Midway (CV-41) Carrier Group to stand against an entire nation's armed forces while supporting Europe. Fit with a scratch SAG and a wing of reserve F/A-18 squadrons, can the Americans hold the line? Or will Cuba deliver the killing blow that ultimately wins WW3 for the Soviets?

-Side Briefing-

SITUATION:
The war in Europe has taken a drastic toll on NATO’s men and material. The SLOC to Europe must be kept open. The SLOC is threatened by Cuba, which has remained surprisingly neutral for now. This is not true anymore. As of today, Cuba has declared war on the US. We have a major convoy carrying a National Guard division about to leave port and make its way through the Gulf of Mexico, and it cannot wait until the Cubans are neutralized. Under your command you have the USS Midway, outfitted with a number of reserve F/A-18 squadrons, as well as AEW and ASW aircraft.

I cleaned up text in the Scenario Description (mostly) and Side Briefing (a little)--happy to do this for anyone else!

-Scenario Description-

Once the Third World War breaks out in the early 1990s, conflict between superpowers quickly spreads across the globe. While the Soviet Union and its allies begin to battle NATO, Cuba immediately claims neutrality. NATO does not yet realize that Cuba plans to attack the US just as the Americans deploy their troops on the European continent.

In the book The War That Never Was, Cuba witnesses the overall success of NATO and eventually ratified permanent neutrality. But, what if this never happened? What if Cuba entered the war during this precarious moment in time?
