Realistic Hydrogen Engine

I think you are all confused about the conversion efficiency... SE batteries are 80% normal and 90% prototech.
Hydrogen *should* be much worse than it is, or as this mod makes it, with an efficiency from water via hydrogen to power of about 40%.
A tank full of hydrogen would still be phenomenal amount of stored power and certainly worth while generating from excess renewable power.

Correct. And also more efficient wattage wise as a battery loses 50% of the power put into it, hydrogen in this will store 80%. Yes more infrastructure, but cheaper power wise, and easy to hack in a thruster as well.

Ah, so this is for making a lot of hydrogen at a loss of energy to store in ships etc. then converting it to power because it is a more denser energy medium?

It makes it more realistic, and is a better way of storing massive amounts of power. It is 80% efficient, rather than battery 50%. Rather than nerfing ice mining, it is the energy investment that costs. It also therefore plays well with the water mod, as water no longer is infinite energy, but an efficient energy storage medium, making it worth the hassle to set up for large bases, and large ships

This makes the engine literally useless unless I'm missing something? Small grid O2 takes 100KW of power just for the engine to make 80KW. What is this mod useful for?

Still useful for trickle generating power to crack ice, then use the higher power to run things like refinery banks. It is still 80% efficient, which is better than the battery's 50% efficiency

nice, that always annoyed me. Just not sure if the engine is still relevant with that change
