The Black Scorpion

In 1990, Sting was tormented by a supposed figure from his past, The Black Scorpion. Ole Anderson played the role for a while, as the man behind the gimmick had not yet been decided. Some fans speculated that WCW would be bringing in then-WWF Champion The Ultimate Warrior, a former tag team partner of Sting.

The role was then played by Al Perez for while, although a magician was sometimes used to incorporate magic tricks into the Black Scorpion gimmick. Perez left WCW after debuting at Clash of Champions and Anderson broke his arm training, leaving WCW scrambling to find someone to work under the mask. A match was set for Starrcade for Sting's World Heavyweight Championship, with the Black Scorpion required to unmask if he failed to win the title.

Supposedly, Barry Windham was set to play the role, but Ric Flair convinced WCW to let him play the role, arguing that since Windham had recently played a fake Sting, he would be badly damaged by essentially repeating the same angle. Flair then wrestled Sting at Starrcade after entering the arena from a spaceship. Sting won the match and unmasked Flair, who would go on to win the title a month later.
