POLITICAL CAPITAL 2022

This scenario directly follows the events of the two scenarios "Hell in the Backyard" of the 2022 series. It is recommended that you play both scenarios for proper context on the events of "Political Capital".
Two weeks have passed since the skirmish in the Caribbean, the missile attacks in Colombia, and the Brazilian ground invasion of Ecuador and Venezuela. Almost immediately after the first shots were fired, media outlets and the general public in the states was horrified and confused by the actions of their ally, firmly believing that everything had been fine before. Civil investigations in the matter were quickly blocked by the Department of Defense, but nevertheless a leak in the government confirmed that the attack against Venezuela had been greenlighted by American brass. The prodigious scandal that followed was rivaled only by that of Richard Nixon, and the current POTUS was similarly backed into a corner. Allegedly, an attack from Brazil was seen as a possibility since the 80's, and the likelihood of such an event increased by the year in the eyes of several intelligence circles and leadership. It was now public common knowledge that on at least three occasions, analysts, officers and other military experts had been thrown out of meetings and conferences in the Pentagon after suggesting such a scheme, once under the threat of termination. Such backwards methodology could only point to a severe problem within the military political apparatus, and the public was furious. Calls for impeachment were heard from coast to coast, which began to abate once several high-ranking officers and politicians were sacked, and only then the lull in the storm was temporary.
Meanwhile in South America, the Brazilian military sang an entirely different tune. The shock caused by the Brazilian fleet in the Caribbean and missile strikes throughout South America had exceeded all expectations. The eagle retreated to its nest and decided to protect its territory first, giving the Brazilian army the opportunity to attack unhindered. The demoralized, confused and poorly trained Venezuelan army ran and surrendered by the scores, and upon seeing food, water and power return to their towns, the Venezuelan people within captured cities celebrated at the sight of their conquerors. Footage of happy Venezuelan families and a vast improvement in the quality of life of the people in the now Brazilian-controlled territory struck a loud chord throughout the world, including within the United States itself. Although government-loyal news companies like the Patriot and Stars and Stripes condemned the invasion, seemingly every other American media outlet said the same thing" "Why risk American lives in a conflict against one of our long-time allies, who have acted with our blessing, and are helping the poor people of an impoverished country?".
Of course, the truth was betrayed on both sides. Brazil had acted on its own self-interests and attacked American sailors first, sending ballistic missiles against Colombia and invading a neutral Ecuador. The United States had suffered from internal negligence and maybe even corruption in some areas, but it was also true that a if Brazil controlled Venezuelan oil deposits, much less would be squandered and lost to the rotten Venezuelan regime and more would end up in the US's hands. Like in all conflict, no side was truly free of blame.
Now that the dust in the political arena had settled for the time being, it was time to act. American military leadership quickly switched gears from immediate territorial defense, to self-preservation, and now finally to the offensive. The fact was that an ally had betrayed the United States, and that transgression could not go unpunished under any circumstance. In order to bring about the colossal American instrument of warfare to bear, they would need to win over the hearts of a divided congress and an appalled public. Within war-torn Ecuador, the citizens were suffering a different fate than their Venezuelan neighbors. In order to save lives and reignite a fighting spirit, it was once again time to show the world the atrocities of war...

Managed an average score in the end and struggled to get that to be truthful! Actually quite tricky with the distances and very busy. Liked the multiple updates and the news releases.
Its not easy knocking out some of the targets. Ammo bunkers in particular persisted.
The scoring for the likes of the broadcasts etc is nicely done.
