Well, it was genetically engineered by the combine. So it make sense they would sooner or later upgrade them.

@Little Newb the combine have taken over many bases with the head crab shell thingys.I doubt the combine new a bout the gonomes mostly because they were in black mesa and you know... black mesa got nuked. but it is unkown why the zombies in ravenholm didnt turn into gonomes (maybe father gregory killed them all?) and it would be sick to see them again. and the weird green stuff returns in half life alyx but i dont know what its is mutations maybe idk.

Sometimes i wish that valve could be more consistant with the whole headcrab fiasco, why did the zombies in the first game have all the green pulsing stuff on them, why don't we see any Gonomes in hl2? Gonome would've been very usefull in helping the combine take out bases and outposts without having to spend too many fast or poison headcrabs.

@ronni8002 combine engineered the poison headcrab only, while the fast headcrab is just a 'male' headcrab technically (meaning all normal headcrabs are females)
