Keep looking and applying, I have friends who experienced similar long, frustrating searches (in the IT world, which has an unfortunately similar outlook) who did eventually get a foot in the door. Frankly, you have more talent than they did if you promise not to tell them I said that.

@jean -oooo who knows what I would build in real life. I can imagine far stranger and prettier things out side the limits of SE.
@faceless - this is bit sad but I have used design software and made an amazing portfolio and resume. I applied with several game developers I even applied to work with keen. I thought I was golden, I'm a concept artists, a builder, and great at marketing. None of them wanted me.
