AJ Lee quickly became popular on the WWE main roster after her debut in 2011. AJ, who had finished in 3rd place on the third season of NXT, entered into an on-screen relationship with Daniel Bryan just before he won the World Heavyweight Championship by cashing in the Money in the Bank contract. Bryan ended the relationship after blaming AJ for his 18-second loss at WrestleMania XXVIII - Sheamus had landed a Brogue Kick just after Bryan kissed AJ for good luck.

AJ's gimmick then shifted into more of an unstable persona, and she got involved into a feud between then-WWE Champion CM Punk, Bryan, and Kane. AJ later accepted a marriage proposal from Bryan, but turned him down at the altar on the 1000th episode of Raw and revealed she had accepted the role of Raw General Manager. AJ's affections were often part of major WWE storylines over the next few years.

In the ring, AJ won her first WWE Divas Championship in June 2013, defeating Kaitlyn at Payback. Even as a heel champion, AJ was popular with fans, and she became the longest-reigning Divas Champion of all time with a historic reign of 295 days.

She turned face in 2015 during a feud with Paige, and captured the Divas title two more times before leaving WWE in April 2015.
