What's funny is that letterboxes are intended to look "cinematic" on a 16:9 monitor, but don't take your screen size into account - it's interesting to play on a 32:9 and have the game go "yeah no this isn't wide enough, add some bars at the start"

Originally letter boxes were made to make up for the different resolutions a movie could be projected on (see: tiktok videos posted on YT making up for their vertical resolution by doing blurred stretched version of the video in the background or just vertical letter boxes), but since then became a kind of a stylistic choice
