The Wiltshire, Somerset and Weymouth Railway was created in 1845 to build and operate a railway from Chippenham, to Weymouth and Salisbury. They began the construction in broad gauge, and got as far as Westbury. The line opened to passengers in 1848, but however they had to sell off to the Great Western Railway, in 1850. The line was extended to Salisbury by the GWR in 1856. They then connected to the L&SWR at Dorchester in 1857, for trains to Weymouth. The line between Dorchester and Weymouth was mixed gauge, as the W,S&WR was Brunel Gauge and the L&SWR was standard gauge. This line went through all the gauge conversions in 1874, with the rest of the GWR network.

As of then, all GWR trains to the West Country had to travel from Reading to Taunton via Didcot, Swindon, Chippenham, Bath and Bristol.
This was until the GWR built the Berkshire and Hampshire Extension Railway between Westbury and Reading, which allowed for trains to reach the west country via Hungerford, Patney, Westbury, Frome, Castle Cary and Yeovil, in 1862.
And then in 1905 another line was built between Castle Cary and Taunton, allowing for West Country trains to bypass Yeovil.
This route now forms the Reading - Taunton line as of modern day.

This map allows you to re-create the entire W,S&WR, and other surrounding lines such as:
GWR mainline from Swindon - Bath
B&HR between Westbury and Hungerford
S&DR between Bath and Blandford
L&SWR between Salisbury and Crewkerne
L&SWR between Wareham and Waymouth
And other various branch lines!

@RolleyPovey, Thank you, I'll try this out as soon as I finish my current map. I know this is going to be another of my favourites by you.
