Era - 1960s/1980s - Krav Maga

Imi Lichtenfeld was born in Austria-Hungary in 1910, and grew up in a time when it was dangerous to be Jewish in his part of the world. Lichtenfeld was fortunately an excellent athlete, proficient in boxing, wrestling and gymnastics, and used his ability to help defend his community against anti-semetic mobs, organizing fellow Jewish athletes in fighting their foes.

After escaping the Nazi occupation, Lichtenfeld went to the Middle East, and taught the Israeli Defense Forces(IDF) in hand to hand combat for the next two decades. He would then branch out and teach his self-defense style to the general public, starting the spread of Krav Maga.

Lichtenfeld's principles were to be direct, combining defense and offence into the same movement and to provide principles of self-defense that could be taught and trained to prepare in a realistic fashion against various attacks.
