Jilicsan ee Bannaanka (Ruby in the Void)

描述
Located in the Indian Ocean approximately 1500km east of the Somalian coastline, “Jilicsan ee Bannaanka”, which loosely translates to “Ruby in the Void”, is also commonly referred to “Jasiirad Yar” or “Ruby Island” by its inhabitants. Jasiirad Yar was discovered by ancient mariners around 1000 years ago, who saw a glow on the horizon while sailing on the India-Africa trade route and decided to investigate. They found an island being formed from ruby red lava erupting from new volcano, a story that influenced naming Jilicsan ee Bannaanka when it was eventually settled several generations later after the volcanic activity had subsided.

The island was considered a jewel in an otherwise empty part of the Indian Ocean, with fresh water, bountiful wildlife and natural resources. Throughout history, Jasiirad Yar has always been an important trading port, providing a safe and defendable harbourage, along with easy access to the African, Ottoman and Oriental markets.

Jasiirad Yar stayed neutral during both world wars, uniquely choosing to support both sides in the latter. Although having never been invaded or occupied, during the 1600’s was regularly frequented by pirates selling their ill-gotten gains and that heritage has continued through to modern history. Considered democratic, it is no secret that traders and business have swayed local politicians, creating policies making it a tax haven, supporting corruption and becoming an international sportswear counterfeiting hub.

The one and only time Jasiirad Yar participated at the Olympics was during the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo winter games, achieving 9th place in the pair’s figure skating.

Infrastructure and resources

Start square has ample room to start your city. Suggest spreading around the lagoon towards the harbour, which has some oil resource for petrochemical industry.

A ring road highway gives good access across the island and will hopefully keep traffic free flowing. Once surface roads are complete, the AI may send traffic on shortcuts through built up areas, recommend slowing and/or restricting certain vehicle access on the town surface roads to help manage flows, especially for industrial traffic.

A small island on the northern side of the main island has oil deposits and infrastructure ready for heavy industry, including a secondary port. The international airport under construction at this location is due for completion within 5 years and will provide air connections to hubs in the Middle East, Europe and Asia.

A large spring fed lake in the hills above the building plain is supplemented by rain fall and provides a plentiful supply of fresh water to start your new city, with enough flow to wash sewage out to sea. The catchment area for the lake is rich in wildlifeand native forest, but hidden underground are large deposits of ore that could make you rich. As industry demands increase and the city expands, you will need to decide whether to mine with all its negative environmental impacts or let the land keep its natural pristine ecology.

Game mechanics

The highway and rail networks are connected to the outside world via hidden underground tunnels, an additional highway connection is available, but will require extensive tunnelling. I tried to get the roads/rail as smooth as possible, there are one or two dips that I just could get rid of. Network extensions national highway will give an idea of where I think some surface roads will be, but won’t impact the map if they don’t load.

Unlimited tree mod is not required, but the count is getting near 225K, so might be useful. Can get away without the 81 tile unlock mod, but would suggest unlocking all 25 tiles.

Went with the vanilla tropical theme and no specific LUT, open to suggestions for alternatives.

Thanks to all the custom asset creators, you make this good game great!

Enjoy

Network Extensions 2 and March 2023 update
I haven't done any updates to this map since initial publishing, nor have I tested post March 2023 CS update. I don't intend on doing any further updates, but if you subscribe to this map and it works for you, or it doesn't, or you get it to work with some fixes, I'd appreciate it if you dropped a comment below.

Note this requires NE2, which is now obsolete. Thanks to BonBonB who provided the following links to substitute the missing mod:

I have played a little bit of skylines before, this is the first map I’ve created and published. This tropical island was one of several map ideas I had, but I wasn’t initially going to be the first one I did. I have since made Wyvernmont, working on a third, planning a fourth map before intending on coming back to reboot this one and do it the way I originally thought about.
