Long Island Rail Road DX

The Long Island Rail Road is a network of commuter rail lines on Long Island, New York. The network has a total length of 319 miles, with the western extremeties being New York Penn, Long Island City and Atlantic Terminal stations. The eastern-most points of the network are two lines going to Greenport and Montauk. The network has at least 124 stations, with the headquarters at Jamaica, one of the busiest stations in the United States. Jamaica has over 1,000 trains pass through it per day, and a daily ridership exceeding 200,000 passengers.

The current fleet on the LIRR is made up of 836 Bombardier M7 and 170 Budd M3 electric multiple units. Both classes are made up of what are called 'married pairs' - two cars semi-permanently coupled together. As well as the M7's and M3's, the railroad also operate 24 DE30AC and 21 DM30AC locomotives, which are used to pull C3-type passenger cars, of which there are 134. In the 2nd half of 2018, a new fleet of EMU's from Kawasaki - the M9 class - having been arriving on Long Island. This fleet of 92 units is set to replace the M3's, which were built in 1984 and 1985.

The only difference between the DM30AC and DE30AC locomotives is as follows: the DM30AC can operate either from its onboard diesel engine (an EMD 12N-710G3B-EC) or from the third-rail system, while the DE30AC only has a diesel engine. The dual-mode capability of the DM30AC allows trains from the non-electrified parts of the network to run direct to New York Penn station, owing to the prohibition of diesels in the East River and Hudson River Tunnels, on the east and west sides of Penn station respectively.
