In late June 1979, a Soviet November-class submarine was exploded in the Gulf of Tokyo.At that time, Soviet submarine were being tracked by the Japanese anti-submarine patrol plane.All crew members of the submarine were killed.The Soviet Union warned that it would retaliate, accusing Japan of being a dirty preemptive strike.
Japan claimed that they were not responsible at all and that it was an accident.And soon Japanese diplomats asked Washington for help. The United States soon issued a statement warning that the U.S.-Japan alliance was strong and that the U.S. troops would intervene automatically if the Soviet Union attack Japan.The Soviet Union responded by deploying Tu-22M bombers to the Far East.
