Vaughans Diamond Building

In the late 1860's, Vaughan’s Diamond Building stood out from its fledgeling single and two-story neighbors. Rising above the unpaved roads with its height and distinctly European style, it was one of the most prominent buildings in the Town of Kansas.

By 1890, the intersection of 9th, Main, and Delaware had become one of the busiest in the city, and the Diamond building stood in the middle of it. Simply called “The Junction,” it became a flurry of business, horses, streetcars, newfangled automobiles and hundreds of citizens making their way in between. A Metropolitan Cable Line flagman was stationed at the center to try and bring order to the chaos. One such man, an Irish immigrant, came to be known by locals as "Wide Awake!" for the phrase he'd regularly shout at passers-by who needed to mind the traffic.

The building was razed in 1915 to make way for the Westgate Hotel; the statue, "Muse of Missouri" now sits on the spot.
