When the "Bad Old Days" of railroading began in Canada in the late 1950s, Canadian National Railways found itself losing money at an astronomical rate, partially due to a steep decline in passenger ridership and because of the outsourcing and closure of local industry. As a result, the CNR rebranded itself in 1960 by radically changing its logo, paint scheme and even its name from "Canadian National Railways" (CNR) to simply "Canadian National" (CN). Unfortunately, this was not enough to stop the railway from hemorrhaging money. Tracks quickly became overgrown because of an inability to keep them maintained. Stations were demolished left, right and center as passenger service was abolished across the country.

Heavyweight passenger cars were quickly becoming a thing of the past by 1960. They were far too outdated with some dating back to the turn of the century. They were only used for another decade or so before being retired and scrapped or sold off.
