Bruno Sammartino

The legendary Bruno Sammartino was the most popular wrestler of his era and held the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship (now part of the WWE Championship title lineage) for a record 4,040 days. Bruno's two reigns with the title each lasted several years, and he remained popular, especially in the northeast, throughout his entire career.

Sammartino was born in Italy and hid with his family from the Germans during WWII as a young child. After the war, Sammartino and his family left Italy and moved to the United States, settling in Pittsburgh, where his father had moved a few years prior. Sammartino went on to become one of Pittsburgh's favorite sons and an icon in the city.

Working territories in the northeast led Sammartino to fame across the region, and he was a perfect fit as the WWWF champion in the 60's and 70's. The "Italian Superman" was immensely popular with fans and famously sold out Madison Square Garden 188 times, the last being his WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2013.

Sammartino had a falling out with WWF/WWE after leaving the organization in the late 80's and became an outspoke critic of the direction the product was taking. However, he reconciled his differences with Vince McMahon in 2013 and accepted an induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.
